The R38 subway car was built by the St. Louis Car Company for the New York City Subway system in 1966. A total of 400 R38s were built and were in service until they were retired in 2008.
The R38 was known for its distinctive "watermelon" design, with a green and silver paint scheme. They were also one of the first subway cars to have air conditioning.
The R38s operated on the A, C, and Franklin Avenue Shuttle lines. They were eventually replaced by the R160s and R179s.
While in service, the R38s underwent several modifications, including upgrades to their propulsion systems and the addition of electronic destination signs. Some cars were also rebuilt and used for work trains.
Today, a few R38s still exist, including one preserved by the New York Transit Museum.
